The March 18, 2022 Experience House Party 3 - Part 2 Special Guest: Robert Kool Bell of Kool & the Gang

The Experience

Music and Movies is a new interactive experience in which the audience plays and active role in creating the art. The night begins with the viewer listening to a carefully curated set of music spun by Q-nice, followed by a few scenes from an interesting movie carefully selected by Velo. Much of the show is a conversation where the viewer is asked to discuss, analyze or critique the movie scenes. Often by not always, Q-Nice, Velo and the Cru will interview a special guest who has a passion for music, film or both. You may have heard the songs before or seen the movies but you have never felt the art that is produced by combing the two, with a special group of people on a Friday night.

Karuna Shinsho

Born in Hawaii to Japanese parents, Karuna grew up surrounded by music. Her father, a classical music singer and DJ, regularly took her to concerts as a child. When she moved to Japan, Karuna fell in love with jazz after she saw the late Nancy Wilson sing at a club in Tokyo. She was blown away by the heart-wrenching interpretation of the master vocalist’s signature song “Guess Who I Saw Today”. Karuna also became obsessed with bossa nova after hearing the songs of João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Prior to Karuna’s journey as a musical artist and lyricist, she was a recognized face in broadcast journalism, first on Japan’s NHK Television, then later on other international networks, including Asia Business News, CNN International, and Australian Broadcasting Corporation. For fifteen years Karuna was seen by millions of viewers around the world and was highly commended at the Asian Television Awards as Best News Presenter.

After leaving journalism and during a challenging period in her life, Karuna, now based in the Washington, D.C. area, turned to singing as a source of comfort. At this time, she also met her mentor Nanny Assis who, upon seeing her passion for music, agreed to produce her debut album of bossa nova classics and jazz standards in three languages – English, Portuguese, and Japanese.

Karuna’s first album, “To Love Again”, isn’t just about romantic love, but also reflects the human need for self-love and compassion for others. Karuna hopes that her music will help lift spirits and bring joy to her listeners, especially during difficult times.

The February 25, 2022 Experience Cool Runnings Special Guest: PHZ-Sicks

When a Jamaican sprinter is disqualified from the Olympic Games, he enlists the help of a dishonored coach to start the first Jamaican Bobsled Team. (IMDb) Directed by Jon Turteltaub (1993)

PHZ-Sicks

At a music festival in Denton, Texas, an unfamiliar hip hop artist from the DMV took the stage to an audience of 20 onlookers, at best. To most there, he was a stranger. But that didn’t matter. By the end of the show, the crowd was packed to full capacity of passersby who heard the music, stopped, and stayed. That performer was PHZ-Sicks – and he credits that show as his most memorable to date.

Pronounced “Physics,” PHZ-Sicks approaches his craft with a singular goal: create timeless music. Something listeners can always come back to. The ‘stick to your ribs’ kind of music that gives listeners pause while thoroughly entertaining along the way. From social injustices in America to partying and relationships, his body of work is a snapshot of growth that showcases PHZ-Sicks’ fluidity not only as an artist, but as a young black man learning to navigate through the world today.

PHZ-Sicks’ latest track, “Run It” was released in June 2019 (along with the music video) as the third single from his upcoming album, “Good Day, Greater Tomorrow,” which is set to drop in late 2019.

PHZ-Sicks’ musical interests began while growing up in rural Mississippi. Dealing with mental illness and sexual abuse through his childhood, PHZ-Sicks credits music for saving his life.

After moving to Woodbridge, V.A., his love for hip-hop blossomed, as he grew to idolize lyrical wordsmiths Andre-3000 and Jay-Z. He got involved in the battle rap scene – first online, and then at in-person battles at shopping malls; even gaining some traction from local blogs and radio stations. It was then when he started studying masters like Busta Rhymes and reviewing techniques of songwriting and producing. With newly bought, at-home equipment, PHZ-Sicks began to lay down mixtapes.

His passion for producing grew through college and after graduating from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PHZ-Sicks returned to the DMV area to release more formalized projects.

PHZ-Sicks released his first full-length project, “The Moment” in 2013. The self-produced project received high praise, often for the robust and soaring production value, which PHZ-Sicks intentionally engineered to mimic the sweeping sounds of orchestral works without hiring a full orchestra to play. “The Moment” received high regards from music blogs, 2DopeBoyz, DJBooth, and HipHopReviews. He’s also performed on the United States Capitol lawn with fellow DMV talents and opened for established acts such as Wale, J.Cole, and Big K.R.I.T. PHZ-Sicks has also played at festivals such as Toronto’s North by NorthEast (NXNE) 2012 and Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW) in 2014.

Be on the lookout for “Good Day, Greater Tomorrow,” which is set to be released on all streaming platforms later this year.

Side Effects

Synopsis: When Kai Jones has a final exam for her Africana Studies class, the last thing on her mind is the side effects of some vaccine she just took. However, things take a turn for the worse as her professor delivers an unsettling lecture about how doctors experimented on Black people throughout history. As time slips by, a series of increasingly disturbing hallucinations lead to a shocking discovery.

Director’s statement: I wrote and directed this film, Side Effects, after taking a vaccine for COVID-19. For a while, I put off taking it because of my suspicions regarding unauthorized medications. This was further compounded by the history of doctors taking advantage of Black people, such as the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment from 1932-1972. However, I came to understand that it is not worth living life in fear.

The main character in the film, Kai, initially shrugs off this suspicion after she takes a new vaccine for COVID-19. However, her fear intensifies as the side effects of hallucinations worsen.

In my personal experience, speaking with friends and family, I saw that other Black people shared a similar suspicion, yet because of work, school, and community, got the vaccine anyway. This inspired me to create Kai’s inner conflict. While battling hallucinations, she ends up literally fighting herself to finish her final exam on time.

Using a hazer became a key visual for scenes where Kai experienced hallucinations and proved to be effective in bouncing off colorful lights and creating an ominous atmosphere. I also enjoyed working with the lead actress because her performance is so natural and compelling.

I decided to create this horror film because this genre allows us to explore the roots of our fears. For example, Kai’s professor delivers a lecture on how doctors experimented on Black people throughout history. In my film, I want to illustrate how, for some, the fear of vaccines and doctors is rooted in history of racism. I want to encourage viewers to fight their fears.

Amber Hopwood

Amber is a filmmaker and photographer from Waco, TX. She released her first short film “Shoot Your Shot” last month on YouTube. She starting her filming in 2019, but the career has been a lifelong dream of hers.

Daddy-O of Stetsasonic

Over forty years after their formation in 1979, the legendary hip-hop band Stetsasonic returns to the forefront of music with their new single, “(Now Y’all Givin’ Up) Love.” Executive produced by founding members Glenn “Daddy-O” Bolton and Bobby Simmons with the legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy, this new release is reflective lyrically of the music-with-a-message tone Stetsasonic is known for.

After we released ‘Blood Sweat No Tears’ in 1991, the group disbanded because I felt that after ten years of making music, we’d exhausted all our ideas,” said Daddy-O. “So, I went to work as a producer/remixer on projects for artists such as Mary J. Blige and Big Daddy Kane as well as some solo records of my own. Through the years, though, Stetsasonic wanted to reunite but with no pressure on one another.”

“Finally, we did get back together and a gig came up in the UK in 2019, which resulted in the promoter badmouthing the band onstage. He accused us of only sending over a few members and not the entire group and this was a habit we did a lot – which is absolutely false. So folks in the hip-hop world were putting us down for that. When it came to light that we were true to our word, then folks started coming around. That got to me! So as a result, we came up with ‘(Now Y’all Givin’ Up) Love’, with lyrics that not only pointed to what happened to us but others who were badmouthed and then praised later.”

Released on July 31st 2021, “(Now Y’all Givin’ Up) Love” is available on Bandcamp – https://stetsasonic1.bandcamp.com/album/now-yall-giving-up-love-maxi-single

Men at Large

R&B duo Men at Large arrived during the tail-end of the new jack swing era with strong support and creative input from fellow Clevelander Gerald Levert. Expressive vocalists Dave Tolliver and Jason Champion began with Atlantic subsidiary EastWest and released two albums for the label: Men at Large (1992) and the relatively mellow One Size Fits All (1994). They reached Billboard’s R&B chart with seven singles from those titles, including the Top Ten hits “Use Me” and “So Alone,” the latter of which was a ballad addressed to Tolliver’s mother, who had recently passed. Third and fourth Men at Large albums were issued through independent labels during the late ’90s and 2000s. After the duo split, Champion recorded contemporary gospel material and was featured on high-profile albums by A-listers Kirk Franklin and Deitrick Haddon. Tolliver popped up on tracks by Rome and 8Ball & MJG and released solo albums in 2009 and 2015. In 2016, with Edgar “Gemini” Porter in place of Champion, Tolliver reactivated Men at Large through the single “Date Night.” ~ Andy Kellman

Gatsby Randolph

Based on the meteoric rise of Kobie’s alter ego; Gatsby Randolph, the film follows Gatsby as he flies on a one-way ticket from Tennessee to LA for a once-in-a-lifetime deal, only to watch it fall apart and he is left standing on the sidewalk in Hollywood with no options. Ever the chameleon, Kobie invents Gatsby Randolph, and quickly sets a course to conquer the city that had all but slammed the door on his dreams.
The documentary is a funny, poignant wild ride through the red carpets and hills of Hollywood with unfettered access to all the glitz and glamour the city is built on.

“As a filmmaker, I had to recognize that my own story of rags to riches was in fact a movie in the making,” says Gatsby. “It was a challenging film to create, and to watch it become a movement and to now be in the running for an Oscar, is success beyond my wildest dreams.” Gatsby shares, “I believe that BLK PRIME is the perfect partner as they understood my vision for the film and we are completely aligned and committed to its success.”

“There was no question for me, once I watched the documentary that this was the exact type of content we want to bring our audience,” states Lauren Pearson, VP of Business Affairs at BLK PRIME. “As an African American star and producer, we immediately loved Gatsby’s vision for the film, and his filmmaking style. ‘Who is Gatsby Randolph’ is as funny as it is poignant and above all it is inspirational. You will find yourself on the edge of your seat cheering for Gatsby as against all odds, he charms his way to the top.”

The Best Man

Just before best friend’s wedding, the life of Chicago writer becomes crazy when the friend guesses that new book’s story based on his bride’s fervent past. (IMDb)

My father was president of Vee Jay Records in the early 1960’s, and yes, I met the Beatles and thought they were old !!!   It was after the 1964 Hollywood Bowl concert.   Very exciting time.   I was born in New York and we moved to Los Angeles in 1960.    I was a child actor and played a lot of alien children because I had gold hair and big green eyes.  Modeled in high school for Broadway and Bullocks, then went to business college (it was the 70’s and that’s what women did).  In 2010 or so, took an improv class, then went to Stella Adler, and again The Actor’s Studio in Burbank.  Also studied voiceover with Marc Cashman and also at the Actor’s Studio in Burbank.
Got married in 2002 by Elvis, in Las Vegas, and happily divorced several years later.  Had two life altering, potentially fatal car accidents in the last ten years.   Surviving two potentially fatal accidents changes the way you look at life.  It makes you grateful for being alive.
